Visiting a Cyprus casino: age, ID, dress code and getting there

Everything a first-time visitor asks before going to a Cyprus casino, in the order you need it: who can enter, what to bring, what to wear, how to get there and what to do if something goes wrong.

Age and ID

The minimum age to game at City of Dreams Mediterranean and at every C2 venue is 21. Staff check age at the entrance, so bring an original photo document: a passport or a national ID card. A photo on your phone is not enough.

In the north, casinos admit adults only and 18 is the usual minimum, but hotels set their own door policy. You also need your passport or ID card to pass the crossing point, so you will have it with you anyway.

Under 21 in the south? You can visit the resort, its restaurants and shows at City of Dreams, but not the gaming floor.

Dress code

City of Dreams publishes a two-part dress code, and it is the strictest of the Cyprus casinos:

TimeCodeExamples
07:00–19:00Smart casualCollared shirts, smart trousers, jeans, Bermuda shorts, closed shoes
19:00–07:00Elegant attireDresses, skirts, smart trousers or jeans, closed shoes

At any hour the casino may refuse entry for flip-flops, slippers or other open-toe shoes, ripped jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, sportswear, wet or dirty clothes and uncovered beachwear. The C2 venues and hotel casinos in the north are more relaxed, but smart casual is never wrong.

Getting there

  • From Larnaca airport: about an hour by motorway to City of Dreams in Limassol; around 45 minutes to Nicosia or Ayia Napa.
  • From Pafos airport: about 15 minutes to C2 Pafos in Yeroskipou and roughly an hour to Limassol.
  • Inside Limassol: City of Dreams is in Zakaki, west of the centre near the port, a short taxi ride from the seafront hotels.
  • To the north: by car or on foot through a crossing point; see below.

Crossing to casinos in the north

Most visitors reach the casinos in the north through the crossing points on the Green Line. The pedestrian crossing on Ledra Street in central Nicosia is the easiest for an evening in North Nicosia; drivers usually use Agios Dometios on the west side of Nicosia for Kyrenia, or the crossings near Deryneia and Strovilia for Famagusta and Bafra.

  • Carry your passport or ID card and show it at both checkpoints.
  • Buy separate car insurance at the crossing: policies from the south usually do not cover the north, and many hire firms do not allow it at all, so ask first.
  • The Republic of Cyprus does not recognise Ercan airport or ports in the north as legal points of entry. If you fly into the south, cross by land.
  • Check what you can bring back south: limits apply to goods such as tobacco and alcohol.

Money and winnings

The Republic uses the euro. In the north the local currency is the Turkish lira, but many hotel casinos run tables in foreign currency, so ask the cashier before you buy chips.

  • Ask for a receipt when you cash out a large amount, and keep it.
  • Anyone carrying cash of €10,000 or more into or out of the EU must declare it to customs. Cash taken across the Green Line is subject to the same threshold.
  • Tax on winnings depends on where you are resident. We do not give tax advice. Check with an adviser in your home country.

At the table

  • Wait for the dealer to finish a round before joining, and buy in by placing cash on the table, not in the dealer's hand.
  • Phones are usually not allowed at the table; photos of the gaming floor are not allowed.
  • Each game has a house rules leaflet with limits and payouts. City of Dreams publishes a game guide on its website.
  • If you disagree with a decision, say so at once and ask for a supervisor. A dispute is much easier to settle before the next round starts.

If something goes wrong

Refused entry, a disputed payout, a card charge you do not recognise or a lost item: start with the venue. Ask for the duty manager on the spot, write down the time, table or machine number and the names of staff, and keep every receipt.

If the venue does not resolve it, the next step in the south is a written complaint to the venue and then to the Cyprus Gaming and Casino Supervision Commission. In the north, write to the hotel management first. Our dispute help service explains the route for your case and helps you write the complaint, free of charge.

Staying in control

Decide what you can afford to lose before you go and treat it as the cost of the evening. At City of Dreams and the C2 venues you can set a limit on money or visits, take a short break or exclude yourself for 6 or 12 months. Free help is available on 1422 and from the PHAROS Centre on 25 580448. More on our responsible gambling page.
